  5. Ribosomal protein L16 is one of the proteins from the large ribosomal subunit.
  6. In Escherichia  coli,  L16  is  known  to bind directly the 23S rRNA and to be
  7. located at  the  A  site  of  the  peptidyltransferase center. It belongs to a
  8. family of ribosomal proteins which, on the basis of sequence similarities [1],
  9. groups:

  11.  - Eubacterial L16.
  12.  - Algal and plant chloroplast L16.
  13.  - Cyanelle L16.
  14.  - Plant mitochondrial L16.
  15.  
  16. L16 is a protein of 133 to 185 amino-acid residues.  As signature patterns, we
  17. selected two conserved regions in the central section of these proteins.
